Today is Bell Let’s Talk Day. Let’s all help to remove the stigma of Mental Health, whether it’s depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or any of the other illnesses. Mental illness has touched different members of my family many times over the years and it has taken on various forms. It really was something NOBODY talked about. It meant you were weak, not as capable as the next person, and you could be sent away to an institution for 6 weeks at a time. I have noticed a great deal of progress with how people are treated, both by the medical profession and by those around them. But there is still a lot of work to do.
I appreciate the efforts of people like Clara Hughes and Michael Landsberg to step in front of mental health initiatives and try to help others. We all know that there are services out there but acknowledging the problem and asking for help are a whole other story.
Today, let's make mental health the number one thing we talk about and think about. 1 in 5 people will struggle with a mental health issue at some point in their lifetime. Look around you. Are you one of those people? Is the person in front of you in the Tim Horton’s lineup one of them? What about your cousin, nephew, grandmother? What if talking about it makes a huge difference in someone’s life? Wouldn’t that be great!!
