Welcome To The New Homefinder

May 5, 2011

Welcome to the new Homefinder.  What you see is the culmination of months of effort.  We started by talking to people all over the place about what they wanted on a home search website.  We kept hearing the same things: people want a site that is easy-to-use, that is simple, that allows them to search by location above all, and that lets them save and share listings.

We set out to create just that.  The new Homefinder is faster and offers a streamlined search experience.  You can save listings and searches, share listings that you love with friends and family on Facebook and Twitter, and find REALTORs near you to help you.

Most of all, we hope that Homefinder helps you find a place to call home.

We would love to hear what you think.  Please use the comment section below to let us know!

I like it - fast, clean, and simple. Nice job!

The new site is pretty, but it seems the ability to search by location has actually been reduced. My favorite feature of the old site was being able to search for all listings within a fixed radius of a particular point. (I was using it to find condos within walking distance of work.) Now, just entering the address gives overly narrow results, and the only other option seems to be using vague terms like "Downtown Toronto".

I can understand the advantage of not overwhelming people with options, but would an "Advanced Search" that gave us all the old options be possible?

Hi Trevor, thanks for the feedback, I appreciate it. We're looking at adding radius back in, and we're also looking at other search tweaks. In the meantime, if you do the search for the address and then zoom out on the map, you should start seeing condos that are in the proximity you're thinking of.

This site has limited appeal for me. I loved the old site where I could enter say "North York" and search different neighbourhoods as well as obtain demographic information about the neighbourhood. Now I enter " North York" and end up with nothing. It may be that I am a technophobe but I was quite easily able to manipulate the old site. This site gives me nothing but frustration. I don't have an address or postal code to enter, I just know where I would like to live. Sadly, this new site does nothing for me and I will have to migrate elsewhere

On May 06 2011 at 6:08 AM Adrian said:

John, sorry to hear you're frustrated. We're still making changes to the new version of the site, so we hope you'll bear with us.

In your case, I believe the issue is simply that the site isn't sure what you mean by "north york" and wants you to enter "north york, on" or "north york, toronto" instead. If you search for neighbourhoods and include the city (and province name, if the city is a commonly named one), I think you'll find that all of the information you were accustomed to seeing is still present.

Thanks very much for the feedback - we'll be updating the site soon to take into account some of the things we're hearing.

I wish it was possible to sort the "New price listings" to view only the area you were interested in. Seems interesting that there are 3877 properties that have a new price. However, it is not practical & time consuming to have to go through them all. Also, would like to be able to pull up a listing by the MLS listing ID- like in the old Homefinder.

Hi David,

Re. "new price listings", noted. I think we can probably do something about that.

Re. MLS # - we just updated the site to allow you to do just that.

Where is your RSS feed go??

Hello there. You were an unique site, but I'm sorry to tell you that you made it very bland now. It looks like you are trying to copy MLS. It is frustrating to navigate it now. If you type Markham.ON it gives you listings from TO to. Or where it is condo townhouse now, it is just general condominium. If you want it too improve it you should just add the new future to the old site. Like other people said I have to migrate to other site now.

I love the new site. i found the old one kind of clunky and slow but the new version feels much quicker, i am able to find results more quickly. I preferred the old site over MLS although I didn't like some parts, but now I REALLY prefer this site to MLS.

I also really like the new map search, it is far more useful than the maps on the old version of the site, although the photos of houses are too small on the map. also, some more advanced search options would be useful.

To respond to Elena who just wrote a comment, if you search for listings in Markham and use the map you can easily zoom in on the region you are interested in, and then you can use that button to view them as a list too. it's very handy. good job homefinder.

I do miss the detailed demographics & charts - this detail is invaluable & a tool that no other site has

homefinder.ca is surpassing MLS just with the details alone!

I don't like the fact that maintenance fees for condos are no longer listed in the new format.

On May 16 2011 at 10:44 AM Adrian said:

Hi Rene, thanks for bringing that to our attention - it was not on purpose. We're adding that back in momentarily.

Hi, prefer the old site, you could isolate neighbourhoods easier, also preferred the old map, when you scroll down the page to see something, the map also moves and you have to waste time trying to find the property again on the map. Also, would like to see which rooms are on what floors now the "Type" and "Description" columns are identical. Property taxes would also be a valuable component to know. Plus the original listing date.

where is RSS?

On May 24 2011 at 1:47 PM Adrian said:

Hi John, Alex,

We can definitely put the RSS feeds back in if they are being used. We weren't sure how much of them were actually useful to people but if you're missing them, we can look at replacing them.

I also liked the RSS feeds and miss them very much.

Hi Rene, John, Alex,

We've added the RSS feeds back into the site. On each listing page, you'll see a link to other listings in the same neighbourhood, e.g. http://www.homefinder.ca/neighborhoods/1070-kirkendall-real-estate, and you can get to an RSS feed of listings there (link at the top left). You can also visit the city page from that page, and get an RSS feed of listings in that city, although in both cases it is limited to the most recent 200.

To make it easy to find RSS feeds, we set up a page with the complete list:

Please let me know if this solves your issues and if there's anything else we can do to improve the RSS feed experience.

As someone who looks at real estate listings on realtor.ca and previously homefinder.ca atleast 5 times a week just for personal research, I must say that with the direction the site has taken ("dumbed" down) I likely will no longer use it as a search/research tool.

Not sure what you were thinking on this aside from making it a "faster" site. Suggestion: go back to the old site and fire whomever came up with the idea to make a change. This is clearly the worst website transition I have ever seen.

With this "new" site you have moved from being a place that offered unique content to a poor man's version of mls...

Hi Craig,

Sorry to hear you're less than thrilled with some of the changes that have been made. I'd love to get more details from you on what's bothering you, so I'll drop you a line using the email you left when you wrote this comment (hopefully you won't mind).

Hi Rene, John, Alex,

Just made a small tweak to the publication date on the RSS feeds. Can you let me know if things are working as expected and as you wanted? If not, please let me know what's wrong. Thanks!

On June 02 2011 at 11:29 AM Chris said:

I have to admit I felt the same way Craig (May 28 comment)did when you made the changes to this site. I am finding, though, that things are improving, but I'm still missing the metric/feet conversion tool for room dimensions. As well, I have noticed that even though I have it set to show the newest house listings at the top of the list, the newer ones are at the bottom.

On June 02 2011 at 3:47 PM Cathy said:

Hi Chris
Thanks for posting your comment and in the near future we will be bringing back the metric/feet conversion tool. We are also aware that our search options are not working properly and we are working on correcting that ASAP.

On June 02 2011 at 4:56 PM Adrian said:

Hi Chris,

We just fixed the search order with newest to oldest / oldest to newest. Thanks for bringing that to our attention.

As Cathy mentioned, we'll also add the toggle between metric and imperial room dimensions.

Hi Paola
Thanks for visiting our site and sorry about the late response to your comment.
We are looking into adding information on schools and we will keep you posted.
