East Coast Check Up
The flavour of the Canadian Maritimes is embellished with the presence of these predominantly older 65 years and up folks who live in a condominium, single attached or movable dwelling in small communities throughout the east coast. There are some married people but also a significant mix of separated and widowed individuals, so many live independently. Due to their age, educational opportunities were not available to them when they were young; hence they have been employed as child care or support workers, as labourers in primary industries or heavy equipment operators but may now be retired. Reflective of this are incomes of $10,000 - $40,000, some extracted from government transfer payments. Expenditures are quite low as these folks have already accumulated most of their tangible needs; however, they enjoy their homes, the outdoors and seek to enhance their health with above average spending on medical care and supplies. Deeply rooted in Protestant values, these folks embrace a traditional east coast lifestyle.
