Tips for Creating the Perfect Home Gym

Back on New Years Day, did you resolve to work out more, lose weight or get fit? Did the traditional gym not work for your lifestyle and comfort level? While the initial cost of setting up a home gym can be high, over time it can pay for itself, as you won’t require yearly club memberships any longer.

Home gyms provide convenience and privacy. Since private training sessions at a traditional fitness centre can be pricey, having a home gym can absorb some of those costs.

Before you commit to building a home gym, you should consider following:

Decide where to put it

Typically, home gyms are found in the basement, as homeowners can sacrifice this rather than upstairs living space. However, basements aren’t the only place for a home gym. If your home has a full attic, that can be an option as well. You can also renovate a back shed to accommodate fitness equipment, or turn a secondary bedroom or unused home office into a gym.

In the end, you should choose a space that isn’t going to take away living space from your home. It should be a welcomed addition, not a burden.

List your goals

Another reason why gym memberships might seem like a waste to you is that you have access to so much equipment and so many classes, but you use only a few machines. Why pay for everything when you need just some things?

Your fitness goals will dictate what type of home gym to design. Do you want to do weight training mostly? Do you prefer cardio machines, such as treadmills, elliptical trainers and spin bikes? Will you train solo or with a partner? Are you doing sport-specific training or cross-training? Are you more into yoga, Pilates and stretching?

Once you know what type of gym you need in order to reach your fitness goals, you can plan out your space better.

Consider the decor

Once you’ve determined what type of gym space you want, you can start thinking about the decorative elements. If you want the room to be motivating and energizing, think about bold colours and inspirational artwork. If you want to build a yoga studio for relaxation and meditation, choose soft colours, calming elements and comforting items, such as plush floor cushions.

Buy what you need

If your home gym is just for your personal use, and not a space you’ll use in a professional sense to train clients, you can buy only the basic equipment that you need. Try to buy versatile, multi-use equipment. Don’t buy a full rack of weights if you’re not going to use them all, but rather the weights that you would use for specific exercises. You can always add to your collection later.

Set a budget and stick to it. It’s okay if you cannot afford the top-of-the-line treadmill. Get a quality one that will work for you, or look for a gently used second-hand one in great condition. Unlike those at a fitness club, your treadmill won’t endure as much wear and tear, so you can afford to buy a less-expensive model.

Install proper flooring

Gym floors should be durable, slip-free and noise-absorbing. They need to be able to stand up well to heavy equipment and to reduce noise. If your gym is in the attic or a spare bedroom, you won’t want the sounds from the equipment and your music to travel throughout the house. A slip-free, cushioned surface is ideal for you, as it can prevent injury. You can buy interlocking gym floors made of a thick, compact foam that you can assemble to fit the space.

Work out the details

Gyms don’t have mirrors just so that you can admire your gym outfit, but rather to help you check your own form and posture. They also help make the room look bigger and brighter, which will be helpful in a basement or shed.

And what’s a workout without some tunes? Install a sound system so that you can play your favourite gym playlist to motivate you. You’re at home, so you can skip the headphones.
